One of the questions I get most is, “How do you keep your beard looking so good?”
My answer is simple:
My barber Trent.
But lately, I have to admit my Silver Fox beard wasn't looking quite like it should.
The beard was getting a little too long in some places and needed some serious shaping.
So on Thursday, August 20, it was time for another trip to see my barber, Trent Welch of Perfect Cutz, located inside Supreme Barbershop at 606 Springville Road in Birmingham.
For the past six months, Trent has been the man behind keeping my Silver Fox beard looking sharp. I can't grow hair on my scalp, so sometimes it seems like all that hair growth has been redirected to my beard (it grows seemingly twice as fast).
And apparently, I'm not the only one noticing. Just two days earlier, a younger guy stopped me and said: “Man, Roy, I must say, your beard looks so good. What's your secret?”
I smiled and gave him the real answer, “My barber Trent.”
Time for Another Beard Tune-Up
I texted Trent, and fortunately, he had an opening.
When I walked into the shop, I greeted him.
“What's up?”
Trent nodded back and pointed me toward the barber chair.
For the next hour, my master barber went to work.
First, Trent began picking out my beard, carefully separating the hairs and getting everything ready for the grooming process.
Then he pulled out his secret weapon—a contraption that produces hot steam designed to open the pores and relax the hair.
As the steam worked, Trent combed through my beard, getting those silver hairs loosened and ready to be shaped.
Then came the compliment every bearded man wants to hear.
“Your beard has gotten so thick since I first started cutting it six months ago,” Trent said. “Whatever you're doing, keep it up.”
I quickly gave him my answer.
“Thanks. I put beard oil and beard balm on it every day.”
Snip. Snip. Shape. Shape.
Then Trent grabbed his clippers and started trimming.
Next came the scissors.
Snip. Snip.
He carefully removed hairs sticking out around my sideburns and beneath my lips.
Then Trent tilted my head back in the barber chair so he could shape the hairs underneath my chin.
He kept turning my chair around, stepping back and admiring his work.
Then—Snip. Snip.
Another adjustment here.
Another one there.
Once he was satisfied with the beard, Trent turned his attention to my mustache.
A few snips here.
A few more there.
He stepped back, studied it, and went back to work again.
That's one thing I have learned about Trent: He doesn't rush the process.
He keeps looking at the beard from different angles until he is satisfied.
Finally, it was time for the razor.
Trent carefully cleaned up the edges of my beard and mustache, giving everything that crisp, finished look.
Then he moved on to my scalp.
Since I can't grow hair on top anyway, Trent took his razor and gave my head the smooth, clean look that has become part of my Silver Fox style.
The Mirror Test
After about 60 minutes, Trent finally sat me upright in the chair.
He looked at his work.
I looked at his face.
He had that look of satisfaction every barber gets when he knows he got it right.
Then he handed me the mirror.
I looked at myself.
I smiled.
Then I nodded my head approvingly.
Yep. Trent had done it again.
The beard was shaped.
The mustache was cleaned up.
The edges were sharp.
The scalp was smooth.
And this Silver Fox Twin was happy again.
I thanked Trent for helping this Silver Fox Twin who has become a little obsessed with keeping his beard looking right.
Then I gave him the same warning I always do: “See you again in two to three weeks.”
And with that, I walked out of Perfect Cutz feeling like a brand-new Silver Fox.
