Birmingham, Ala. -You know how to make the head of a Silver Fox Twin obsessed with his beard swell?
I was minding my own business today when an older white gentleman with a long, scraggly beard walked up to me.
He said:
“Hey man, sorry to bother you, but I gotta tell ya. That white beard looks awesome. How do you get yours so thick? I try and try and can’t get mine to look like that. What’s your secret?”
I smiled.
“My barber Trent.” 😂
I told him I’d gone through several barbers before finding Trent Welch, the barber who keeps my Silver Fox beard looking sharp.

Then I told him something that still makes me laugh.
I used to hide my gray.
Even into my 40s, I was using Just For Men to cover it.
Now?
I’m proudly walking around with a long silver-white beard.
I told him about the birth of the Silver Fox Williams Twins about two years ago when my identical twin brother Troy and I turned 60 and decided to embrace our silver instead of hiding it.
I showed him a picture of Troy and me.
His eyes got wide.
He couldn’t believe we were identical twins.
And just like that, another unsuspecting stranger got the Silver Fox Twins story. 😂
Then I did what any self-respecting married Silver Fox would do.
I texted my wife:
“I got another compliment on the beard.”
After 35 years together, Patrice already knows about my little beard obsession.
Then I texted Trent my barber:
“Great job, man. Another random stranger complimented my beard today—and I told him about you.”
Because when somebody compliments this beard, I’m giving credit where credit is due.

🪮 Then Came the Beard Check
After he walked away, I pulled out my trusty pick and combed through my beard.
Because apparently…
A compliment requires maintenance. 😂
I fluffed it.
Checked it.
Admired it.
Then headed toward my car.
👊 “What’s Up, Old Playa?”
On my way to the car, a much younger Black guy walked by, gave me a dap and said:
“What’s up, old playa?”
I laughed.
“What’s up?”
But as I got into my car, I started thinking:
I wonder if it was the combination of this long white beard AND the tattoos running up and down both arms that led him to call me “old playa.” 😂
Because if he only knew…
I’m actually the exact opposite.
I’m a happily married man who has been with my wife, Patrice, for 35 years.
No playa lifestyle over here.
Just one wife, one family and one very spoiled Silver Fox beard. 😂
Maybe the beard and tattoos gave me a little more street credibility than I actually deserve.
Or maybe that’s just what happens when a 61-year-old man walks around with a big silver-white beard and tattooed arms.
Either way…
I’ll take the compliment.
🪞 Then Came the Mirror
I finally got into my car.
Looked in the rearview mirror.
Patted the beard.
Smiled.
Yep.
Still looking good. 😂
