From Covering Gray… to Celebrating It: A Silver Fox Twin’s Journey

Twenty years apart.

One man who spent years trying to hide the gray… and another who now proudly wears it.

When I was 41, I wasn’t ready for gray hair. Like a lot of men, I reached for Just For Men and kept my goatee dark. I figured looking younger was the goal.

Fast-forward to age 61.

Today, I’m known as Silver Fox Roy, and my identical twin brother Troy and I have built an entire “Silver Fox Twins” brand around our silver-white beards.

The funny thing is, what I once tried to hide has become one of the things people recognize me for the most.

Along the way, I’ve learned something important:

Aging isn’t something to apologize for.

It’s something to celebrate.

My brother and I finally stopped fighting the gray and started embracing it. Now we proudly call ourselves the “Silver Fox Twins,” and we’ve discovered that confidence looks a lot better than hair dye ever did.

One of my favorite reminders is tattooed on my left forearm: “Believe in yourself.”

Those three words apply to a lot more than careers or dreams. They also remind me to be comfortable in my own skin—and in my own beard.

Everyone’s journey is different. Some people color their hair. Others let nature take its course.

Neither choice is wrong.

For me, though, embracing the gray has been one of the easiest—and most freeing—decisions I’ve ever made.

So here’s my question for you:

Another of my tattoos has one of my favorite scriptures: Philippians 4-13 “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

It’s a reminder as I age God gives me the strength to endure all challenges that come my way.

The younger me thought gray meant getting old.

The older me knows it simply means getting the privilege to grow older.

And this Silver Fox?

I’m not reaching for Just For Men again. I’m reaching for my beard oil instead. 🦊
