Major Dwayne Williams Memorial Golf Classic Kicks Off Veterans Week November 9

Written by Silver Fox Twin Roy Williams

Birmingham, Ala.- A round of golf can do more than fill a Monday morning. On Monday, November 9, 2026, it can honor a fallen American hero, support students and help begin Veterans Week with purpose.

The Major Dwayne Williams Memorial Golf Classic will be held at Silos Golf Club in Trussville, bringing together golfers, businesses, veterans, families, organizations and friends for a four-person scramble built around fellowship, remembrance and a lasting mission.

Registration deadline: Friday, October 30, 2026.

A tournament born from a mother's love

The tournament is being organized by former Birmingham journalist Roy L. Williams to honor his older brother, Army Major Dwayne Williams, who was killed at the Pentagon on September 11, 2001.

It is also a tribute to Roy and Dwayne's mother, Pearl Williams, whose health challenges led her to end the original tournament in 2018.

When Roy visited his mother on the 25th anniversary of 9/11, he faced a heartbreaking realization: his mother, who now lives in a nursing home and is living with Alzheimer's, no longer remembers Dwayne or that she lost her son in the Pentagon attack.

That moment helped inspire Roy to bring the tournament back.

For Roy, the tournament is about keeping Dwayne's memory alive while creating something positive for future generations.

Remember how he lived

Army Major Dwayne Williams was a Jacksonville, Alabama, native, University of North Alabama graduate and football player, Army Ranger and Persian Gulf War veteran.

He was a son, brother, husband, father and friend before he was a name associated with September 11.

The nation remembers how he died. Those who loved him will never forget how he lived.

That is the heart of the tournament.

  • Door-prize opportunities

  • A day of fellowship and remembrance

The tournament will also feature a $10,000 Hole-in-One contest, mulligans and a silent auction featuring donated items.

You don't have to be a scratch golfer to participate. The scramble format is designed to make the day enjoyable for golfers of all experience levels.

Sponsors help make the mission possible

Golfers make the tournament come alive, but sponsors help make its mission possible.

Sponsorship opportunities are available for businesses, organizations, churches, veterans groups, civic groups, families and individuals. Those who cannot play can also support the tournament through sponsorships, donations or silent auction items.

Every contribution helps turn a day of golf into something larger: scholarships, educational opportunities and programs that carry Major Williams' legacy forward.

Where the money goes

After tournament expenses, funds raised will support scholarships and programs connected to education, character and service.

The tournament will benefit scholarships at Jacksonville State University and the University of North Alabama, two schools closely connected to Major Williams' story.

It will also support scholarships and programs through the Roy L. Williams Legacy Foundation.

The goal is simple: take the story of one man's service and sacrifice and use it to help open doors for the next generation.

A scholarship does more than help pay tuition. It tells a student that someone believes in their future.

More than a golf tournament

November 9 is more than a date on the golf calendar. It is a meaningful way to begin Veterans Week by remembering a soldier whose life represented service, commitment and sacrifice.

Players will come for the golf. Sponsors will come to support the mission. Families and friends will come to remember Dwayne.

And students may one day benefit from the scholarships created in his name.

That is what makes this tournament different.

It does not simply ask people to remember.

It gives people a way to act.

Be part of the November 9 tournament

Whether you bring a foursome, sponsor a hole, donate an auction item or simply share the event with someone who should know about it, there is a place for you in the Major Dwayne Williams Memorial Golf Classic.

Register by Friday, October 30.

Come for the scramble. Stay for the fellowship. Support scholarships. Honor military service.

Most of all, help us remember Major Dwayne Williams not only for how he died, but for how he lived.
