When I heard that beloved actor Sir Patrick Stewart had died today at age 86, I was already saddened.

He has been one of my favorite actors since watching him portray Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation. I also loved his performances as Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men movies.

But learning that he had faced Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia before his passing hit me on a much more personal level.

My mother, Pearl Williams, will turn 85 next March. She has been battling Alzheimer’s for five years.

I’ve watched this terrible disease slowly take away memories that once defined her life. Some of the hardest moments have been seeing her forget her firstborn son, my brother, Major Dwayne Williams, who was killed at the Pentagon on September 11, 2001.

And, heartbreakingly, there have been moments when she no longer recognizes me.

If you’ve followed my family’s story, you know how difficult that reality has been.

That’s why hearing about Sir Patrick’s journey touched me so deeply. Behind the fame, the awards and the memorable characters was a family facing the same devastating reality so many families know.

Today, I’m remembering an extraordinary actor whose work entertained generations.

Rest in peace, Sir Patrick Stewart. Thank you for the memories you gave us on screen.

And to everyone caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s or dementia, I see you. I understand that the journey affects the entire family.

🙏🏽💔
