🏌🏾♂️ New to Golf or Never Played in a Golf Scramble Before? What to Expect at the Major Dwayne Williams Memorial Golf Classic
Written By Roy Williams-Birmingham, Ala.
Trussville, Ala.-First thing to know: You don’t have to be a great golfer to have a great time.
The Major Dwayne Williams Memorial Golf Classic is a four-person scramble, a team format designed to make the game fun and social.
⛳ WHAT IS A SCRAMBLE?
You’ll play as a team of four.
On each shot:
All four players hit.
The team chooses the shot they like best.
Everyone moves their ball to that location.
All four hit again.
Repeat until someone gets the ball in the hole.
Example:
Your team is 150 yards from the green.
Player 1 hits it 100 yards.
Player 2 hits it 125 yards.
Player 3 hits it 145 yards.
Player 4 hits it 135 yards.
The team chooses Player 3’s 145-yard shot.
Everybody plays the next shot from there.
That’s the basic idea all day.
👥 YOU’RE PLAYING AS A TEAM
This isn’t about one person carrying the team.
You might have:
A golfer who drives the ball really well
Someone who’s good with irons
Someone who’s a good putter
And someone who’s just getting started
Everybody contributes.
And sometimes the beginner hits the shot the whole team needs!
❤️ AND THIS IS ABOUT MORE THAN GOLF
You’re not just showing up for a round of golf.
You’re helping honor the life and legacy of Army Major Dwayne Williams, a Jacksonville, Alabama, native, University of North Alabama graduate and football player, Army Ranger, platoon commander and Persian Gulf War veteran who was killed at the Pentagon on September 11, 2001.
The tournament supports scholarships at Jacksonville State University, the University of North Alabama and through the Roy L. Williams Legacy Foundation.

🏌🏾 WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE GET TO THE GREEN?
Once your team chooses the best shot and gets onto the putting green, everyone putts from that location.
If one player makes the putt, the hole is finished.
Your team records one score for the hole.
Your goal is simply to complete the 18 holes with as few team strokes as possible.
🙋🏾♂️ WHAT IF I’M NOT A GOOD GOLFER?
That’s OK.
You don’t need to know all the rules of golf before you arrive.
You’ll be playing with three teammates, and experienced golfers can help explain things along the way.
You don’t have to hit every shot perfectly.
You don’t even have to hit the ball far.
Just have fun, keep pace and enjoy being part of the team.
🏌🏾♂️ WHAT SHOULD I BRING?
Golf basics:
Golf clubs
Golf balls
Golf glove, if you use one
Comfortable golf shoes or athletic shoes
Hat
Sunscreen
Water
And bring your competitive spirit and a good attitude!

One thing I’d add for your tournament specifically
Because you are trying to attract people who may not normally play golf, I’d put this prominently on your registration promotion:
NEVER PLAYED IN A GOLF TOURNAMENT BEFORE?
NO WORRIES!
This is a four-person scramble, one of the most beginner-friendly team formats in golf. You’ll play alongside three teammates, and everyone hits from the same selected location. Come enjoy the fellowship, learn the game and help us honor Major Dwayne Williams.
