💍 Celebrating 34 Years of Marriage at One of the World’s Greatest Natural Wonders

ree

In mid-September 2025, in celebration of our 34th wedding anniversary, my wife Patrice and I checked off one major item from our travel bucket list:  a vacation to Niagara Falls, Canada.

It was an amazing weekend that I highly recommend for couples, families, and groups alike. To stand before this natural wonder is to witness God’s power on display, a breathtaking reminder of His creation.

This stunning natural wonder is more than just a sight to behold; it’s an unforgettable experience. From the thunderous roar of the cascading water to the mesmerizing views, Niagara Falls showcases the beauty and power of nature.

My biggest tip: Book a room on the Canadian side with a Fallsview. It’s absolutely worth the extra cost. You’ll wake up to panoramic views of the majestic Horseshoe Falls,  a front-row seat to nature’s beauty. There are plenty of accommodation options, from luxury resorts to budget-friendly stays, ensuring everyone can find something that fits their needs.

Below, I provide a brief history of Niagara Falls, followed by my top recommended tours and attractions. (And trust me: the Canadian side truly is the best: prettier, better views, nicer hotels, and more attractions, shops, and restaurants.)

🌍 A Brief History of Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls 1925

Niagara Falls began forming over 12,000 years ago, at the end of the last Ice Age. Massive torrents of meltwater from retreating glaciers carved out the Niagara River, which flowed over the edge of the Niagara Escarpment, creating the first version of the Falls near what is now Lewiston, New York. Over millennia, the sheer force of the water eroded the rock layers, causing the Falls to gradually retreat upstream to their current location.

Today, erosion continues, though human engineering has slowed it to about one foot per year. Water diversion also helps generate hydroelectric power, supplying energy to millions of homes in both the U.S. and Canada.

The Falls have fascinated travelers for centuries, attracting around 12 million visitors each year. From early explorers to modern tourists, people are drawn to marvel at the beauty and magnificence of this natural spectacle.

The Indigenous peoples of the region were the first to witness Niagara’s power, followed by French explorer Father Louis Hennepin, who documented it in 1678. The French built forts to control access to the Great Lakes, including Old Fort Niagara, restored between 1926–1934 and now a fascinating historic site offering year-round reenactments.

In 1896, Nikola Tesla developed the first alternating current (AC) power system here, transforming Niagara into the birthplace of hydroelectric power. Visitors can explore this legacy today at the Niagara Power Vista, a family-friendly attraction featuring interactive exhibits and a multi-sensory 4D theater.

🪨 Geological Highlights

  • Formation: Around 12,000 years ago, glacial meltwater from the Great Lakes carved the Niagara River through the Niagara Escarpment, creating the Falls.

  • Erosion & Retreat: The Falls originally sat closer to Lewiston, NY, and Queenston, ON. Over time, erosion carved the Niagara Gorge as the Falls slowly moved upstream.

  • Ongoing Evolution: Even today, erosion continues — though controlled through modern engineering and water diversion.

🏛️ Human History & Culture

  • Indigenous Legends: Native stories such as that of Leawala and the thunder god Henoon offer mythic origins for the Falls.

  • Industrial Era: In the 1800s, mills and factories sprang up to harness the river’s immense power.

  • Tourism: By the mid-19th century, Niagara had become a major travel destination, and in 1885, the Niagara Parks Commission was created to preserve its beauty.

  • Environmental Management: In 1969, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers famously halted the American Falls to study erosion. Ongoing restoration projects continue to protect the river and its surrounding ecosystem.

Smart Tips for Your Visit

To make the most of your Niagara Falls experience, here are some helpful tips:

Plan Ahead

Niagara Falls can get crowded, especially during peak tourist seasons. To avoid long lines, consider planning your visit during the shoulder seasons of spring or fall. For instance, visiting in early May or late September will allow you to enjoy fewer crowds while still experiencing pleasant weather.

Dress Appropriately

The weather can be unpredictable, so wearing layers is essential. Comfortable shoes are also a must, as you'll likely walk quite a bit. If you plan to take the Maid of the Mist or Journey Behind the Falls, be prepared to get splashed!

Stay Hydrated

With all the excitement, don't forget to drink plenty of water, especially during warmer months.

Capture the Moment

Bring your camera! The views at Niagara Falls are unforgettable, and you will want to capture the memories. Just ensure your camera remains secure, particularly near the water.
