As the leaves turned gold and the air became crisp this fall, the Silver Fox Williams Twins, Roy and Troy, set off on a fantastic journey through Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands. This two week trip from late September to early October 2024 was more than just a vacation; it was a heartfelt reunion 11 years in the making filled with exploration, culture, and cherished moments. Together with their families, they visited 10 captivating cities, each showcasing its unique allure and rich history.

Their adventure kicked off in Troy's new hometown of Kerkrade, The Netherlands with a relaxing lunch at a cafe near Troy's downtown apartment. Then it was off to see the famous Cologne Cathedral in Cologne, Germany followed by the canals of Bruge, Belgium and the University of Leuven Library in Leuven, Belgium. After dropping off Bergen op Zoom in the Netherlands for a Silver Fox beard trim by their college friend and Dutch barber Jaap Leyte, the Silver Fox Williams Twins and their families went on a relaxing and exciting five-day adventure seeing the sites and sounds of Amsterdam and surrounding cities.

Their two weeks concluded with a tour of downtown Maastricht, The Netherlands including a historic church turned into a hotel and a centuries old bridge followed by experiencing beers at an Oktoberfest celebration in Herzogenrath, a small German town near Kerkrade.

One of the highlights was a guided tour of Bruges, Belgium, affectionately dubbed the "Venice of the North." Here, the twins enjoyed a boat tour along scenic canals surrounded by medieval structures that felt like they were from a storybook.

With swans gracefully gliding by and ornate bridges connecting centuries-old buildings, Roy and Troy snapped countless photos, trying to capture the enchanting atmosphere. Fun fact: Bruges boasts over 80 bridges, making its canal system a sight to behold.

A highlight of their trip was the visit to the Cologne Cathedral in Germany. This incredible Gothic masterpiece has stood for over 600 years and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The twins stood in awe of its grandeur, admiring the intricate details of the façade and the stunning stained-glass windows that illuminated the interior with vibrant colors.

Next, the twins ventured to Amsterdam, the vibrant heart of the Netherlands. Known for its artistic heritage, the city’s charming canals and colorful houses captivated them. The delightful scent of freshly made stroopwafels filled the air, enticing them to try this local delicacy.

Although the famous Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and Anne Frank Museum were booked and unavailable, they toured the Moco Museum in the Amsterdam museum district, marveling at modern masterpieces by artists around the world such as Andy Warhol. This experience reignited their passion for art, reinforcing how cultural exploration enriches our lives. The various museums in the district attracts several million visitors to Amsterdam annually, highlighting its importance as a cultural hub.

Continuing their adventure, Next, their journey took them to Utrecht, where they explored historic churches and admired the iconic Dom Tower, which stands at 112 meters tall. As they wandered the charming streets, they reminisced about childhood adventures, strengthening their unbreakable bond over shared stories and laughter.

Gierthoorn, the Venice of the Netherlands

Next they arrived in Giethoorn, a picturesque village often called the "Venice of the Netherlands." Here, the twins and their families opted not to rent electric boats, instead choosing to walk along side the peaceful waters and enjoying breathtaking views of the houses by foot. Troy, his son Thomas, Roy and his wife Patrice shared good Dutch food, laughter and lasting memories.

Another highlight was the long-awaited Silver Fox identical twins beard trim at Mannuh Barbers in Bergen op Zoom by Dutch Barber Jaap Leyte, a longtime friend they first met nearly 40 years ago at the International House at Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Alabama. Jaap gave the twins and their wives and Troy's son Thomas a personal tour of his hometown of Bergen op Zoom. We marveled at the sounds of a band playing at a festival that crisp, Sunday afternoon.

For Roy and Troy, this trip was more than sightseeing—it was a chance to reconnect after 11 long years apart since their father Horace died in their hometown of Jacksonville, Alabama. With Roy residing in Birmingham, Alabama, and Troy in Europe, their reunion felt seamless. Their silver beards and familiar mannerisms sparked endless conversations, reinforcing their deep connection. They eagerly anticipated their next reunion in March 2025 to celebrate their mother Pearl's 83rd birthday in Alabama.
