It took me a couple of days, but I finally figured out why I love legendary rapper Snoop Dogg’s new track “Step” featuring Swizz Beatz.
Then it hit me.
That beat sounds like the jam my wife Patrice and I loved in college!
Snoop Dogg and Swizz Beatz sampled one of my favorite songs from my college days — the 1986 funk and R&B classic “Candy” by Cameo.
Now I understand why that familiar groove grabbed me the first time I heard Snoop’s “Step.”
It wasn't just a new song.
It was a musical flashback.

“Candy,” released by Cameo in 1986, was one of those songs that immediately got your attention. That funky groove and unmistakable sound made it a classic — and hearing that musical DNA come through in Snoop’s new track brought back some great memories.
That’s what I love about music.
A song doesn't have to be old to make you remember when you were young.
Snoop Dogg and Swizz Beatz have taken a sound I knew from my college years and given it a completely different life for a new generation.
And apparently, I'm not the only one who noticed.

Snoop's “Step” was produced by Swizz Beatz and Avenue Beatz, and there is something special about hearing a familiar 1980s groove wrapped inside a modern hip-hop track.
