After attending a concert this weekend featuring rap groups I listened to over 30 years ago, Silver Fox Twin Roy has a question for you:

-One concert took me back 40 years—and reminded me that this Silver Fox still loves his hip-hop. 😂

Birmingham, Alabama-Saturday night, Patrice, her cousin Tracey Williams and I headed to the Alabaster Amphitheater for a free old-school rap concert featuring Sugarhill Gang, Young MC and Tone Loc.

And they did not disappoint.

Hearing Sugarhill Gang sing “Rapper’s Delight” & “Apache,”Young MC’s hit “Bust a Move,” & Tone Loc’s 1990s hits “Wild Thing” and “Funky Cold Medina” took me straight back to my high school, college & early marriage 1990s days.

We laughed. We danced. We sang along.

But what really caught my attention was the crowd.

Black. White. Young. Old. Folks in their 60s like me sitting alongside parents in their 30s and 40s plus a few young couples in their 20s. Everybody was enjoying the same music.

That’s the power of hip-hop.

When Patrice & I began dating in college in 1987, we listened to old school rap like Rob Base& in the 1990s after marriage Snoop Dog.

I’ve been listening since the late 1970s, so I’ve watched rap evolve from Grandmaster Flash, Run-DMC, Rob Base and Sugarhill Gang to the gangsta rap of the ’90s, including N.W.A., Tupac, The Notorious B.I.G., Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre and Naughty by Nature.

Then came Jay-Z, Eminem, Kanye, Lil Wayne, Drake, Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole, Nicki Minaj and a whole new generation.

And here’s the funny part:

This Silver Fox Twin hasn’t stopped listening. 😂

My current walking. playlists still include plenty of old-school R&B and hip-hop, but today’s rap has found its way in too.

One artist who is definitely making my current playlist?

Kendrick Lamar.

So now I have a question for you:
